What is the SAT?

The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a required standardized test for admission into various colleges and universities in the United States.

The SAT is separated into two types of test: SAT I Reasoning Test and SAT II Subject Tests.

SAT I

The SAT I, or simply referred to as the SAT, assesses the verbal and mathematical reasoning skills that students, mainly junior or senior-level students, have developed over the course of their high school years.

The SAT is a good indicator of success or readiness to do college-level work.

The SAT is a three-hour test that is scored on a scale of 200-800.

The verbal reasoning section consists of 78 questions, whereas the mathematical reasoning section consists of 60 questions.

The types of questions asked varies:

  • 58% consists of five-choice questions
  • 25% consists of quantitative comparison
  • 17% consists of student-produced response (grid-ins)

SAT II

The SAT II Subject Tests take about an hour to complete per subject. The subject tests measure how knowledgeable students are in a particular academic subject and how well they can apply that knowledge.

Why take the SAT II Subject Tests?

In addition to the SAT I, many colleges and universities in the United States require or recommend that students take one or more of the Subject Tests for admission or placement.

How to Register

There are three ways to register for the SAT:

  1. ONLINE: The fastest, most convenient way to register is online. Visit the SAT official website to register online. Only credit card payments are accepted for online registration. Some restrictions to registering online apply such as no registration permitted for students under 13 years of age and no registration permitted for School-based ELPT.

  2. MAIL: Anyone can register through the mail and is necessary for special testing arrangements. There are more payment options for mail in registration. Information and Registration Bulletins can be picked up at the NMC Career Center, Building I anytime from Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  4. TELEPHONE: You can only use the phone registration option if you have previously registered for an SAT test. Call the automated system at 800-728-7267 daily from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. Eastern/New York time. There is an additional $10 fee for re-registering through the telephone.

What to Bring to the Test Center?

  • Admission Ticket
  • Current, valid photo ID (Passport if non US citizen, driver's license, employee ID, student ID)
  • Two #2 or HB pencils
  • Completed registration form (if standby)
  • Acceptable test fee (if standby)

Tests are administered in Building A or D. Signs are posted on the day of the test.
