Academic Freedom
Northern Marianas College both believes and has a policy that states that
academic freedom and academic responsibility are inseparable. Academic freedom
is the right of members of the academic community to conduct research, to
teach and to communicate knowledge in their fields of expertise, openly and
without influence by individuals with a particular bias. Members of the academic
community are entitled to full freedom in research and in the publication
of the results, subject to the satisfactory performance of their other academic
and/or administrative duties.
Instructors at the College are entitled to freedom in the classroom in discussing
their subject. However, they should strive to be sensitive to the prevailing
thought and feeling of the community when introducing subjects that may be
controversial. Faculty should also take care to distinguish between personal
conviction and proven conclusions and to present relevant data fairly and
objectively.
