President Dr. Sharon Y. Hart was appointed by the Board of Regents and began her service to the Northern Marianas College as President in July of 2011. Dr. Hart brings extensive leadership and academic experience. Listed below are her professional accomplishments, work history, education, and publications:

Sharon Y. Hart, Ph.D

Dr. Sharon Y. Hart, Ph.D, was born and raised in Michigan and has spent over 25 years in higher education. The mother of three, she has her Ph.D out of the University of Illinois where her thesis focused on the employment status of women in non-traditional careers. Additionally, she has completed studies in the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Hart has 11 years of experience leading other community colleges. She has served as presidents at both Middlesex Community College, CT, and North Dakota State College of Science. Also, Hart has led one private university, serving as Deputy President of the University College of the Caribbean. Hart has also enjoyed administrative responsibilities as Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at NorthCentral Technical College in Wisconsin; Administrative Dean for Agriscience, Apprenticeship, and Technical and Industrial Division at Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin; and, Director of Institutional Research and Evaluation at Chicago City-Wide College. Hart has developed partnerships with colleges and universities around the globe and has published and presented at conferences world-wide.

Her accomplishments, recognitions, and achievements are many. Some of these include:

  • Selected by Washington D.C. as one of the U.S. college presidents to attend the Higher Education and Democratic Culture: Citizenship, Human Rights and Civic Responsibility Forum held at the Council of Europe Headquarters in Strasbourg, France. Responsibility of this Forum was to develop and disseminate world-wide a global position paper on democracy in higher education.
  • Co-recipient of the 2002 Bellweather Award for outstanding achievement in governance, finance and planning. Award given annually to the top higher education educator/university in the U.S.
  • A Fulbright Scholar to India, conducting research in cooperation with the M.S. University of Baroda.
  • Appointed by Governor Hoeven of North Dakota to represent higher education on North Dakota's Workforce Development Council.
  • Appointed by U.S. Senator Dorgan, North Dakota, to serve on the Red River Valley Research Council.
  • President of the Wahpeton Area Chamber of Commerce, N.D.
  • President of the Connecticut - Paraiba (Brazil) Partners of the Americas.
  • Vice President of the Illinois - Sao Paulo (Brazil) Partners of the Americas
  • Commissioner, Women in Higher Education Commission of the American Council of Education.
  • Commissioner, Economic and Workforce Development Commission, American Association of Community Colleges.
